             Back pain can be due to many causes like Lumbar Spodolitis, Spondylosis, Spondylolisthesis, Inter vertebral disc prolapse (IVDP) etc
In Ayurveda the condition is classified to Kadeegraha , Kadee soola, Grudrasi etc. Prana, Udana, Samana, Vyana and  Apana are the the five devisions of ‘vayu’ one the Functinal elements (VATA, PITHA,& KAPHA) of the body. The distruction of ‘apanavayu ‘is the one of the major causes of the backpain. Thus the Ayurvedic treatments helps to clear the Channels of ‘vayu’ especially Apanavayu and get relief to the diseased condition and symptoms.
 Treatments called ‘Kadeevasthi’, ‘Kashaya vasthi’, ‘Thaila vasthi’ along with ‘abhyangam’, ‘Podikizhi’, ‘Pizhichil’, ‘Manjhakizhi’, ‘Navarakizhi’, ‘Kadidhara ‘etc  according to the diseased condition gives excellent result in management of the Back pain.
The treatment also helps to align the spinal canal, helps to maintain the flexibility of the vertebral column and strengthen the muscles, Inter vertebral Discs which maintain the disc space.
Since the treatments helps to maintain the tone of the muscles, the recurrence chances are also less.

Back pain & Its Management in Ayurveda

Back pain is a common problem found in the Society. It may be due to many reasons like Muscular, Neurological, Disc prolapse, Inflammatory, Alignment etc and due to infection etc
The management in ayurveda
The management of back pain may vary from individual to individual according to the condition and cause of the diseases. The usual protocol includes three phases of management.
1.       Reduce the Inflammation and pain
2.       Correction of the Channels, Structure and Alignment
3.       Strengthening and mobilizing the muscles and joints
4.       Rehabilitation
5.       Follow up
The treatment Procedures include
Dhanyamala Dhara – Fermented, Medicated fluid is poured on the body in a particular manner by an assistant for an average one hour daily.
                It helps to remove the inflammation of the muscles and joints as well as all other parts of the body.
Podikizhi – The Medicated Poultices are warmed and applied over the body
                It also helps to remove the inflammation of the joints and muscles. It also helps to relax and reduce the spasm of the muscles and tendons and increase the blood circulation which has a very good role on healing any condition.
Abhyangam
                It is application of oil all over the body especially over head, ears and foot with medicated oils of different kinds suitable for the condition of the patient.

Elakizhi
                It is a kind of fomentation by the Poultice prepared of leaves etc
Manjhakizhi
It is a kind of fomentation  by poultice prepared of Turmeric etc
Dhara / Pizhichil
                It is a kind of Oil fomentation, warm oil is poured all over the body in a systematic way
Thaila vasthi
                It is a kind of enema with medicated oil.
Vaitharana vasthi
                It is a kind of enema with medicate decoctions of Tamarind, Sugar, Saidavam & Gingili oil
Kashaya vasthi/ Nirroohavasthi
                It is a kind of enema with medicines like kashayam (decoction), Thailam ( Medicated oil) etc
Kadeevasthi
                It is a kind of treatment with keeping oil over the lumbar region with the help of supporting materials.
Navaratheppu
                It is a kind of fomentation with massage using the paste made up of rice called navara
Navarakizhi
                It is kind of fomentation using the poultice made up of ‘navara’ rice, milk & decoction.
Exercises to rehabilitate the movements along with the resting, healing phase
Internal Medication       
Some conditions like damaged nerves or muscles has to rebuilt with the help of follow up Management with Medicines
                The Internal medication has to be continued for a minimum period of three months with precautions like free from fall or infections.
Follow up treatments
                Ayurveda suggests follow up treatment to avoid the recurrence of the diseases. It include follow up medication as well as follow up treatment like abhyangam etc  once in a year, a minimum period of 14 days for at least consecutive two more years.
